Sailor Who Died in Pearl Harbor Identified 76 Years Later

Sailor Who Died in Pearl Harbor Identified 76 Years Later (WALNUT RIDGE, Ark.) — An Arkansas sailor who died during the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor will be honored after his remains are brought home this summer. Glenn Tipton was killed aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma, which capsized in the attack by Japanese aircraft. The Jonesboro Sun reports that Tipton’s remains were identified after his family submitted DNA five years ago to the U.S. Navy as part of its efforts to distinguish the remains of sailors. A funeral ceremony will be held in honor of the Purple Heart recipient at the Wings of Honor museum in Walnut Ridge once his remains are returned to Lawrence County. Harold Johnson, who runs the museum, says he and his staff are extremely honored by the family’s choice to use their facility.

FINDLAY, Ohio — The remains of a gunner whose plane crashed in the Pacific Ocean during World War II have been identified and returned to his sister in Ohio after 73 years.

A funeral for Ora Sharninghouse Jr. was scheduled Saturday in Findlay, where his 84-year-old sister, Joan Stough, lives.

She was 11 when he went missing in action in 1944. She tells The Blade newspaper their family never had a funeral for Sharninghouse because their mother held out hope he might return.

The remains of Sharninghouse and a radioman were recovered from their torpedo bomber in 2014 near the Republic of Palau. DNA testing helped identify them.

Stough says she was stunned when the U.S. Navy told her last August that her brother's remains were identified and would be returned to her.
