He joins Tom Brady, who also will not be at the opener. Brady has been on a business trip to Qatar.

Gronkowski, who turns 29 next month, has played his entire eight-year career with the Patriots and has two years remaining on his contract. Part of this year's deal includes a $250,000 workout bonus, paid according to his attendance at voluntary workouts.

Gronkowski caught 69 passes for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns last season, the fourth time in his career he's had more than 1,000 yards receiving.

While this latest move certainly will add fuel to the fire on whether the five-time Pro Bowler will return, Patriots coach Bill Belichick had this to say last week about Monday's program:

"We have the voluntary offseason program that starts on Monday. It will be heavily attended, but I know there are a couple players that I've talked to that have other commitments, but that's the way it always is. So, not really anything new there."
