Aaron Boone embarks on new journey as Yankees manager, already juggling stars and stripes

Aaron Boone embarks on new journey as Yankees manager, already juggling stars and stripes Aaron Boone is the third generation of the Boone family to play in the major leagues, the son of former manager Bob Boone, but he has never managed. Never coached. He hasn’t even put on a uniform since 2009, when he stopped playing.Yet, he says there are no nerves. He doesn’t feel overwhelmed. He exudes that calm, quiet confidence just as he did when he played.“I’m just really excited,’’ Boone says, “and I think part of the excitement is obviously the potential of our club. I look at where we are, and I know we’re pretty good. But also getting to know them and watching from afar, it’s really a good group of guys.

Yankees reliever Dellin Betances said this season would be a disappointment if the Yankees fail to win the World Series . It turns out new manager Aaron Boone agrees. The stuff is there , and Devenski is well-suited to propel the Astros back to the postseason.

One of Boone 's first tasks will be managing Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton — who play the same defensive position.

Gossage blasts Cashman after instructor role revoked

Gossage blasts Cashman after instructor role revoked The New York Yankees did not extend an invitation to Hall of Famer Goose Gossage to act as a guest instructor for spring training for the first time in two years, and he’s not taking it lying down. Gossage, who was not invited due to his history of controversial comments about the state of the game, blasted Yankee GM Brian Cashman for the decision and also took on what he feels is the declining state of the game. “I don’t like Cashman,” Gossage told Brendan Kuty of NJ Advance Media. “That’s all. It’s not a secret.” Gossage blasted Cashman, saying that the GM would prefer to “have a nerd in uniform” as manager instead of what he perceives to be “baseball people.” “If he had any balls, he’d do what he wants to do,” Gossage said of Cashman. “He doesn’t think he needs any baseball people around. Maybe he’s right. The way the game is being run today, maybe you don’t. “The game is so different today. Like I said, real baseball guys for years made a career out of baseball. You’re not a coach anymore. You have to be their best friend.” Gossage wasn’t sure his history of controversial comments, including blasting Jose Bautista for bat flipping and criticizing modern closers for only pitching one inning, impacted the decision. “You’ll have to ask Cash,” Gossage said. “I didn’t get a call either way. There is no respect for older players. There’s no respect for anybody who has any real baseball knowledge. That’s the way it is. That’s what I don’t agree with.

Music to the ears of new manager Aaron Boone . “He’s right about the World Series , it “Embrace that expectation ,” Boone said. “ Expect to go out there and be great. But from what I can tell, the hunger in these guys is real.” There are plenty of questions the Yankees must answer in camp.

Yankees reliever Dellin Betances said this season would be a disappointment if the Yankees fail to win the World Series. It turns out new manager Aaron Boone agrees.

"Well, he's right about the World Series would be a great year," Boone said Tuesday in a press conference. "We understand the expectations and I think one of the things that's exciting for me is to hear these comments and to be around these guys, as they've trickled in the last few days, as I've trickled in.

"Last year was great. A lot of these guys came of age and viewed it as a very successful season, but I think what stands out being in that room right now is each guy I've spoken to, the hunger is there and there's no satisfaction with what they're able to accomplish. We understand it's a very tough road. That will be one of our messages, especially for young players who have had success."

The Yankees have a couple roster battles at second and third base. Gleyber Torres, a top-ranked prospect, is the favorite to win the second base job, but third base is more open. Fellow prospect Miguel Andujar is a candidate, but the Yankees have also been linked with free agent Mike Moustakas in recent weeks.

"We've got several guys now in camp," Boone said. "We've got a couple of veteran guys who are part of the mix. Obviously with guys like Gleyber Torres, Tyler Wade and Miguel Andujar, all real opportunities are right in front of them, as they're kind of knocking on the door as that next wave of guys we think -- whether it's immediately or certainly down the road — guys we feel really good that are going to impact our Major League club for a really long time."

One of Boone's first tasks will be managing Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Both play the same defensive position, meaning one will have to be designated hitter.

Astros' Verlander shuts down Yankees hype: 'The AL goes through us'

Astros' Verlander shuts down Yankees hype: 'The AL goes through us' Justin Verlander is clearly enjoying his new life as part of the defending World Series champion. The Houston Astros star was not about to stay quiet after MLB Network's Chris Russo effusively praised the New York Yankees - who may well be Houston's biggest obstacle toward repeating as AL champion - during a segment on Tuesday afternoon. "There's no way you can't think that the Yankees are the team to beat in the American League," Russo said of the new-look Bronx Bombers, who are now led by the powerful (and gigantic) duo of Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.

Judge is also coming back from offseason shoulder surgery, but Boone was just happy to have two of the most dangerous sluggers on his roster.

"He's doing well," Boone said of Judge. "We talk about managing individuals and getting individuals ready and we'll certainly be as cautious as we need to be in the early days. But I think the one thing that's exciting about both of those guys is we've got two — obviously an MVP, a Rookie of the Year — guys that are tremendous players.

"Both guys are really good defenders as well. And both guys, when I answer that last question, talking about quality individuals that you can tell it's about winning for them. It's about trying to chase down that championship for them.

"There's a lot of buy-in from those guys about being in different spots in different scenarios. But they'll both be very much a part of the process, and it'll be something that is not set in stone right now and is something that will unfold over the next five or six weeks about what are the final roles that we view for them."

Stanton: Yankees debut was better than spring in Miami .
Giancarlo Stanton can't even see Marlins Park in his rearview mirror anymore. Stanton officially donned a New York Yankees uniform for the first time in game action on Friday during their Grapefruit League opener against the Detroit Tigers. It wasn't a glamorous debut in pinstripes for the reigning National League MVP, but it's nonetheless a day he will likely remember for a long time. When he tried to compare Friday to past spring games he participated in with the Miami Marlins, it was simply no contest.
