At its core, racin' is about drama. NASCAR traditionalists don't spell it with a "g" for a reason: Everybody's in a hurry to get to the finish line, so let's eliminate all the extraneous clutter.

But clutter can be fine in the proper context. More cars equals more story lines equals more potential drama.

There will be little drama when the engines rev up for Thursday's Daytona 500 qualifying races at Daytona International Speedway.

There will be 20 cars in each of the two sprint races (60 laps, 150 miles). There will be 40 drivers in the starting grid for Sunday's Daytona 500. Everybody gets a prize!

You don't need a calculator to figure out that even a backpacker with his left-turn signals on is going to have a chance to win the Great American Race. The odds are astronomical, of course, but part of the thrill ride during Speedweeks is the crazy energy of a wild-card underdog.

It is all etched in NASCAR's epic lore, including the story of a driver who started 462 races without a victory. Michael Waltrip finally crossed the finish line first in 2001 in the most bittersweet ride of his life. Team owner and friend Dale Earnhardt died on the last lap while blocking to keep Waltrip a safe distance from the pack.

The Wild Card gathers the four teams that finished third in their respective regional qualifier . They compete in a double-elimination bracket where only the top two teams are qualified for the Group Stage. Four teams in a double-elimination bracket. All matches are played in a best of three.

Now, 17 years later, the trickle effect still resonates. Earnhardt's son Dale Jr. has retired, leaving a hole in hearts and minds for many NASCAR fans. Perhaps one of those talented young drivers who embodies the theme of the new season will step up and become NASCAR's Favorite Son.

Regardless, it won't be the driver who raced his way into the Daytona 500 on Thursday. That number is 12 less than the 52 cars that made a run for it just three years ago. A decade ago, 53 drivers ran a qualifying lap.

"In the future would we like to see more?" said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. "We probably would.

"But I think when you look across all of sports now, the idea of sending someone home with a major sponsor just doesn't happen in sports today. And it's not just a reality for NASCAR, it's really all motorsports and sports in general. So I'd tend to concentrate more on the field that we have, the quality of field that we have, and the incredible drivers and story lines."

As O'Donnell alluded to, the state of affairs in NASCAR is challenging, to be kind. Sponsorships are dwindling, established drivers have priced their way out of the market, attendance is down, and millennials seem disengaged beyond a 140-character tweet.

The don't drag-race anymore, either. They Uber.

Other sports are feeling the same pinch, but that doesn't change the dynamics:

NASCAR is going to have to find some juice in its racing, give fans compelling reasons to engage, and drive dollars back to the sport.

Perhaps 40 isn't a bad number, as long as it's not the same driver and number up front. Diversity in drivers is a good thing, and not just because of the ethnic-marketing push.

"I'd say for the first time in a long time, the teams recognize that we're on the same page of trying to get there with 40 quality cars that are out there each and every weekend and everybody having a shot to win," O'Donnell said." That isn't the case yet, but there are more teams we feel like that do have that shot. ... If you're a fan of the 36th-place team last year, are they moving up the ranks? Are we able to continue that? And we've still got some work to do there for sure."

“ Wild Card ” gives him more opportunities to converse than to clobber, and as odd as this may sound, I really enjoyed listening to Statham talk. But you’ve seen Statham do all that before, and it clashes with the novel-like vibe Goldman successfully creates.

The wild card was established for Major League Baseball's playoffs in 1994 with the intention of helping the best teams that did not win their division to still have a chance to win the World Series. The restructuring of both the American and National Leagues from two divisions each to three made it

Family man

We know everybody is excited to get back to racing. Chances are every single driver in Wednesday's Media Day scrum at Daytona International Speedway will tell you the same thing.

Maybe, everyone except Clint Bowyer. He's more exhausted than excited.

Two reasons: Son Cash Aaron, 3, and daughter Presley Elizabeth, 1.

"These kids change your life in an offseason," Bowyer said. "No more vacations and gallivanting around. It is dad duty. I was home probably five weeks. I think the most I have ever been home since I moved to North Carolina was maybe three weeks.

"It was like chomping at the bit. I had a friend call and say, 'Hey, you wanna go to Nashville?' and I said, 'Yeah, I am going to start walking now.' Just to do something you know? It is a ton of fun. The holidays are just way more meaningful and enjoyable. You are over it quick, though."
