  Tennessee to execute man for rape and murder of 7-year-old girl <p>Tennessee is set to hold its first execution in nearly a decade on Thursday when it plans to put to death by lethal injection a man convicted of the 1985 rape and murder of a 7-year-old girl he was babysitting.</p>Lawyers for inmate Billy Irick, 59, launched a last-minute appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court to spare his life, saying he has suffered from psychosis for his entire life and putting him to death would violate legal norms barring the execution of people with severe mental disorders or disabilities.

There are 61 people on death row: 

  • 60 men and one woman; 
  • 31 people who are white, 28 people who are African-American, one person who is Hispanic and one person who is Asian;  
  • 34 offenders convicted in West Tennessee, 16 convicted in East Tennessee and 11 convicted in Middle Tennessee

Where are death row inmates housed? 

Male offenders on death row are housed at Riverbend Maximum Security Institute in Nashville. The only woman on death row, Christa Pike, is housed at the Tennessee Prison for Women in Nashville.

Who's the oldest person on death row? 

The oldest person on death row is Leonard Jasper Young of Shelby County, who is 73. Convicted of kidnapping and murdering University of Memphis student Hillary Johnson in 1999, he arrived on death row in 2002. 

Who's the youngest? 

Urshawn Miller is 29. Convicted of shooting and killing 24-year-old store clerk Ahmad Dhalai, Miller arrived on death row in March. He's also the person most recently sentenced to death row in Tennessee. 

Who has been on death row the longest? 

David Miller of Knox County has spent 36 years on death row. He was convicted of killing a disabled woman with a fire poker in 1981.

Texas death row inmate convicted of killing child wants quick death .
A Brazoria County, Texas man on death row for his 3-month-old baby's death by the Galveston seawall filed a motion this week asking to waive his appeals and fire his attorneys, hoping to fast-track his path to the death chamber. Travis Mullis, the 31-year-old Alvin transplant sent to death row in 2011, previously sought to forfeit his appeals and in recent months repeatedly raised the possibility of doing so again.“I support my death sentence and want it carried out ASAP,” he told the Chronicle in a letter earlier this year. “I was sentenced to death not indefinite detention.
