Build-A-Bear CEO apologizes after crowds shut down promo event

Build-A-Bear CEO apologizes after crowds shut down promo event Build-A-Bear Workshop Inc's chief executive apologized to disappointed customers and offered an extended discount on Friday, a day after its one-day pay-your-age event prompted massive crowds and shortages at some stores. Sharon Price John, in an interview on NBC's "Today" program, called the overcrowded sale event, which had to be limited on Thursday, heartbreaking and said the global stuffed-animal retailer would extend a sale through the summer."I am sorry that we were not able to provide the service that we wanted," Price John said.

Build-A-Bear was forced to shut down a deal that allowed customers to "pay their age" for bears after chaos overtook malls across the United States.

On Thursday, Build-A-Bear was set to celebrate "Pay Your Age Day" in the US, Canada, and the UK. Customers had the chance to purchase a stuffed animal and pay only their age for the day. Kids were able to pay just a few dollars for stuffed bears, while adults' fees were capped at $29. The bears usually fall in the $20-$35 range.

However, the event had to be cut short after stores descended into "madness."

"Per local authorities, we cannot accept additional Guests at our locations due to crowds and safety concerns," Build-A-Bear posted on Facebook at 11 a.m. ET. "We have closed lines in our U.S. and Canada stores. We understand some Guests are disappointed and we will reach out directly as soon as possible."

There Will Only Be 1 Blockbuster in America Soon

There Will Only Be 1 Blockbuster in America Soon The last two remaining Blockbuster stores in Alaska are slated to close next week, leaving just one location of the once-iconic video rental store left in the U.S. The stores, in College and Debarr, Alaska, will officially close on Monday, July 16, Blockbuster Alaska said on its Facebook page on Thursday. They will reopen the next day, July 17, for inventory sales that will run through July and August. “These are the last two Blockbuster stores in Alaska that survived and it is sad to say goodbye to our dedicated customers. We have thought of you as family for the past 28 years,” wrote District Manager Kelli Vey and General Manager Kevin Daymude in the Facebook post. “Thank you for sticking by us throughout all these years. I can’t tell you how much it means to us. We hope to see you at our stores during the closing, even if it’s just to say ‘Hello’. What a great time to build your media library and share some Blockbuster memories with us.” The closings come after a number of other Blockbuster stores have shuttered in recent months. The company’s North Pole location closed in March, leaving only five locations left at that time. Now, the lone remaining Blockbuster store is in Oregon, according to the Anchorage Daily News. While most states lost their Blockbuster locations years ago, Alaska had held onto the brand. And the Anchorage location had recently gotten national attention when Last Week Tonight host John Oliver sent the store a collection of Russell Crowe memorabilia, including the actor’s jockstrap from his 2005 film “Cinderella Man.” Now, the managers told the Anchorage Daily News the memorabilia will likely go back to its owner, and residents will have to find their movies another way.

"Brought my lil one to the @buildabear pay your age event. Lines are super long. Was told it’s a 5 hour wait!!!" reads another caption. "Guess we’re not getting one."

Many customers were infuriated by the chaotic event.

"This clearly was NOT thought out," reads one Facebook comment. "You would have been far better off sending out a coupon to all BAB members for a one time pay your age bear per family member to be used in the month of July."

"Definitely think you should hold a second day for all of the disappointed parents and kids or send a pay your age coupon to the bonus club members who didn’t get to participate," reads another.

Build-A-Bear did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

A new Amazon Go store will open in Seattle. San Francisco and Chicago are next .
Amazon says it will open a second of its no-checkout-line Amazon Go stores in Seattle by fall. San Francisco and Chicago will follow. Once customers have swiped in with their Amazon Go app, hundreds of cameras and sensors in the store track what they pick up.The new store will be located in Madison Centre, a 36-story office tower that opened in the heart of Seattle's downtown last year. It's to the south of Amazon's cluster of office buildings at the far northern end of downtown, closer to the Seattle Center with its iconic Space Needle.
