  Justin Timberlake Will Reportedly Summon a Hologram of Prince for His Halftime Performance Hopefully this doesn't get weird.In a press conference on Thursday, Timberlake denied rumors that he was planning a surprise 'N Sync reunion for his halftime performance on Sunday (Beyoncé already played the reunion card in 2013, after all). Instead of performing with his old band mates, Timberlake will reportedly appear onstage with Prince, resurrected via hologram.

TMZ reported Saturday that Justin Timberlake planned to use the high-tech effect to pay tribute to The Purple One during his halftime set at U.S. Bank Stadium in It’s unclear whether Timberlake ever planned to include a Prince hologram in his set or if he scrapped it in response to the backlash .

In the days leading up to Justin Timberlake’s halftime performance, Prince’s friends and family were nervous about a rumor that Timberlake was going to use a hologram of Prince during a tribute to Minnesota’s late, favorite son.

The musician was not a fan of this technology. Timberlake did not use a hologram; instead, a backdrop projection of Prince appeared behind him while he played on the piano. But, per Page Six, Timberlake was going to use the hologram but backed out at the last moment.

“He was 100 percent ready to use the hologram but nixed it due to backlash from social media and Prince fans. That’s why he had that sheet up like in your mama’s backyard,” an inside source told the publication.

On Saturday, Prince’s longtime collaborator Sheila E. wrote on Twitter that she had spoken to Timberlake, who had reassured her that there would be no hologram at the big game Sunday. Already, fans were upset that Timberlake, who had a lyrical feud of sorts with Prince more than a decade ago, was doing a Prince tribute at all.

But the drummer also said in a Monday interview with Entertainment Tonight that she had persuaded Timberlake not to do it.

“I just said no. I just felt that it was too soon,” she told E.T. “The hologram was weird, and Prince did tell me [to] make sure nobody ever does a hologram of me. ‘If you’re still here, make sure nobody does a hologram.’ He thought it was very demonic and that’s his spiritual beliefs.”   (video provided by ETOnline.com)

A source close to Timberlake told Page Six that the musician, who recently had a listening party for his new album, Man of the Woods, at Prince’s Paisley Park, was never going to use a hologram.

“There’s no way Justin would ever disrespect Prince’s legacy, the source said. “He didn’t change his performance.” Vanity Fair has reached out to Timberlake’s team for comment.
