Excuses ran rampant Tuesday as the first stage of jury selection got underway in the trial of an Upper West Side nanny accused of murdering two small kids in 2012.

Five jurors were picked to serve in the four-month trial of Yoselyn Ortega, 55, charged with fatally stabbing Lulu and Leo Krim, 6 and 2, inside their W. 75th St. home — while many more tried hard to avoid serving.

“I live right across the street…I cannot even remotely imagine how someone can kill two young children with knives…” said one woman before she was even called into the jury box for questioning.

Another man insisted his role as a “devout Catholic” disqualified him.

Ortega’s defense will hinge on her not being responsible for the heinous acts “by reason of mental disease or defect.”

“How could you ask me to make this kind of decision?” one woman asked a visibly annoyed Justice Gregory Carro.

A woman picked for the jury complained she was being “forced” to participate and was “stressed out” by the process.

The selection is expected to last at least a week with opening statements on March 1.

In court, the man said he meant to indicate he didn't approve of religious extremists. The same juror also said he had a daughter whose friend died in the Pulse massacre.
