General Motors is returning to the medium-duty truck market in 2019 thanks to the vehicle you see here, the Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD. Featuring styling that apes the smaller Silverado HD, the medium-duty truck gets a standard Duramax V-8, available four-wheel drive, and an Allison transmission with a power take-off.

That powertrain combination has been proven in generations’ worth of smaller GM trucks, but in this situation it creates 350 hp and 700 lb-ft of slow-churning torque. That’s more power than any of the tunes for the Ford F-650/750’s Power Stroke V-8, with as much or more torque than two of the three Power Stroke versions.

Chevrolet identified a few core challenges with current medium-duty trucks, then set out to solve those problems with the Silverado. A factory-painted frame with one-piece frame rails, hidden fluid lines, and unobstructed frame tops ease the cost and complexity of upfits. Seven cab-to-axle lengths, ranging from 60 to 162 inches, help improve versatility for a variety of jobs. A 50-degree wheel cut allow for both a tight turning circle and easier “walk-up” maintenance. Hood contours were specifically designed for better forward and downward sightlines, easing driver fatigue and stress in city driving. An available, factory-installed rear suspension helps smooth the ride without resorting to upfit solutions, while triple-sealed doors create a calmer, quieter cabin. And a passenger-side DEF tank filler and driver-side fuel filler prevent refueling errors.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado: A Tale of Four Tailgates

2019 Chevrolet Silverado: A Tale of Four Tailgates And an explanation of the coolest power-up oneTouch the electronic latch on the tailgate or double-tap the tailgate button on the key fob and the latches release, then the motor spins to slow the descent of the lightweight aluminum gate. To close it, use the remote, find the switch, or just manually lift the tailgate part and the motor brings the gate up until the latches catch and pull the door closed. There are force switches that reverse the motor if any resistance (like from fingers) is felt, and obviously it won't close if something is resting on it.

And finally, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD will be available with a variety of in-cab tech: available OnStar connectivity, Commercial Link, a built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and wireless cell phone charging. These features should really help drivers and owner-operators stay connected to the home base while out on the job.

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD go on sale in late 2018, alongside GM’s other medium-duty trucks, the XD-series Low Cab Forward. Pricing has yet to be announced.
